Peace Be with You: How I Cultivate Serenity in All Areas of My Life So I Can Be a Stronger Leader
In a profession as demanding as dentistry–where patient care, leadership and advocacy often pull us in a dozen directions–it’s easy to let stress take over. But over the years, I have learned true leadership comes from finding peace, centering yourself and leading with intention.
For me, serenity comes from serving others. Here’s how I integrate peace into my daily life so I can be a stronger leader for my patients, my family and the profession.
Finding Stillness in Motion: Dawn Rides and Clear Minds
Before the world fully wakes, I’m already on my bike. There’s something about the quiet of dawn, the crisp morning air and the rhythmic push of the pedals that clears my mind and sets the tone for the day ahead.
Cycling is my time to reflect, process and prepare. As the road stretches out in front of me, I think about the work to be done, the people I’ll serve and the challenges I’ll face. But rather than letting those responsibilities overwhelm me, I let the ride bring clarity. By the time I step off the bike, I feel more focused, centered and ready to take on whatever the day holds.
Every leader needs a way to reset, whether it’s cycling, running, fishing or simply sitting in quiet thought. Finding that outlet is one of the most powerful ways to cultivate resilience and maintain perspective.
Grounded by Faith, Strengthened by Service
My faith is a foundation in my life. It keeps me grounded, reminds me of my purpose and reinforces my belief that leadership is about service.
Faith, in whatever form it takes for a person, gives us the ability to step back from the chaos and remember what truly matters. Whether I’m advocating for dentists on a state or national stage or helping a nervous patient through a procedure, I try to lead with the values that have shaped me:service, unity, trust, community and involvement.
We all need something that anchors us: a belief, a philosophy, a guiding principle. In the most challenging moments, that anchor is what keeps us steady.
Family First, Always
No matter how full my schedule gets, one thing is non-negotiable: family comes first. Being present for my wife and children is always a priority. Leadership starts at home, and the best way to serve others is to make sure the people closest to you know they are loved and valued. Whether it’s a family vacation, cheering on my kids at their events or simply sitting together at the end of a long day, these moments are where real peace is found.
The strongest leaders know success is measured by the relationships we build and the lives we touch.
Peace as a Leadership Principle
Finding peace through movement, staying grounded in values, and prioritizing family allows me to be a more present, effective leader. It strengthens my ability to fight for the profession, to standup for dentists’ rights and to ensure our work is always centered on patient care. Whatever peace looks like for you, make time for it. Your leadership, your profession and your life will be better for it.
