The Voice of One ADA Trustee: What’s in ADA Membership for Dentists These Days?
As we see membership numbers dwindle year over year, I’m compelled to share with my readership that joining the American Dental Association (ADA) offers invaluable resources and advocacy that can shape the future of your career. The value of ADA membership goes beyond the basic benefits of continuing education. Membership ensures your voice is heard and gives you the remarkable opportunity to make a tangible difference in how our profession moves forward. Here are a few of my experiences that come to mind when I reflect on what membership has done for my peers and me…
Navigating Financial Realities
One of the most pressing issues for many dentists today is managing financial obligations, particularly student debt. As someone who served on the ADA President’s Student Debt Task Force from 2014-2015, I understand the unique financial pressures that general dentists face early in their careers. Through my role on various committees and boards within the ADA, I’ve seen firsthand how the association advocates for student debt relief, working to improve loan terms and refinance opportunities. Membership in the ADA connects us all with financial planning resources specifically tailored for dentists, helping us manage debt while continuing to invest in our practice’s growth.
Advocacy That Protects Your Interests
The ADA serves as a powerful voice for dentists at both the state and national levels. As a member of the ADA’s Board of Trustees from the 3rd District (2021-2025), I’ve been directly involved in the association’s legislative efforts. I’ve advocated for dental insurance reforms, workforce support and practice management regulations to support the ADA in protecting our interests. Further, I’ve been involved through the ADA in negotiating fairer dental insurance practices and ensuring young dentists have access to opportunities for leadership and growth. In short, it’s been my experience that the ADA’s advocacy efforts help shape a brighter future for practitioners and patients alike.
Innovation and Leadership
As a current member of the Innovation Advisory Committee (2023-2025), I’ve had the privilege to work alongside other dental leaders to assess how new technologies and practices can enhance patient care and streamline operations for dentists. Membership in the ADA offers access to cutting-edge research and innovation like this through platforms such as the ADA Scientific Research Institute and partnerships with organizations like the ADA-Forsyth Institute. Our organization ensures you are always apprised of the latest developments available to you and your practice for long-term success.
Networking and Mentorship
ADA membership also connects us all to a broad network of professionals who can help guide our careers. As someone who has spent over two decades in organized dentistry, serving as a mentor to new dentists and participating in leadership roles across the American, Pennsylvania and York County dental associations, I’ve seen how invaluable these connections can be. The ADA facilitates mentorship opportunities, leadership training and peer-to-peer learning, helping younger dentists build relationships that can provide a trusted support system and deep professional development.
Being part of the ADA means being part of a community that advocates for all of us, provides us with resources to succeed and empowers us to stay at the forefront of innovation. ADA membership ensures you have the support, tools and network needed to thrive, no matter where you are in your career. I encourage you to explore what the ADA can offer you and take full advantage of the opportunities available.
